[Wheras my eyes land on the shoreline] By Layli Long Soldier

Poetry as Protest - Week 1

Hi friends! It has been an age since I popped up on Substack or landed in inboxes with a poem to ponder. Earlier this year I recorded a poem a day for 30 days in my Poems Read from Scotland series and I found the deep dives and regular search for words to be super-helpful as I wrangled with my own writing. In all honesty, I’ve found it difficult to maintain a writing routine these past few months, but I can feel the crackle of creativity grow at the moment and I have some exciting things planned for the autumn and winter, so please watch this space for more info. But, in the meantime here is the first of 10 short videos looking at poetry as protest. The format is a simple one - I will read a poem, scratch the surface of what spoke to me and hopefully set cogs turning for some of you lovely folk too. Some poets will be familiar and some will be new - to you and me - but in looking at how their poems lend themselves to protest I hope that we can shine a light on hope and humanity in these darkening times. I’d love for you to comment, share and chuck some feedback my way. Take care and thanks for watching and/or reading x
